Nails are an integral part of any complete dermatologic and/or physical/medical examination. There are many different aspects of nail care, and it is the dermatologist's responsibility to make patients aware of adverse effects and industry abuses that could arise in this huge arena. It is important to educate consumers, caregivers, and nail technicians to the possible injurious aspects of the wonderfully satisfying industry of nail cosmetics. Patients should avoid aggressive nail instruments and practices and should be cautious of safety concerns when utilizing nails salons and spas. It is especially important to remind patients to consult their dermatologist expeditiously for any persistent nonhealing nail abnormalities.
